Hollywood, which means in German 'Stechpalmenwald', is a district of Los Angeles and a center of movie stars and movie studios. The name Hollywood was coined by H.J.Whitley, the father of Hollywood, in 1886. By 1900 the region had only a post office, a newspaper, a hotel, two markets and only 500 inhabitents. Since 1900 it belongs to Los Angeles. The first movie, which was filmed there was 'A Daring Hold-Up in Southern California'. The first studio in Hollywood was established by New Jersey-based Centaur Co. By 1920 Hollywood had become world famous as the center of the United States film industry. Today the biggest film studios are the Universal studio and Warner Bros. Every year the Academy Awards were held in late March/early April since 2004. The Oscar is held in the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue since 2002. There are 54 film festivels every year, which translates into more than one every week.

Also famous is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was created in 1958 as a tribute to artists working in the entertainment industry. The first star on the Walk is Joanne Woodward. Her star was set in place on February 9,1960. Today there are over 2000 stars on the Walk.
